I sostantivi come group sono chiamati collettivi perché indicano un gruppo di persone. In inglese possono essere seguiti dal verbo al singolare o al plurale, a seconda del contesto. In generale, se si pensa al sostantivo in modo impersonale, si sceglie il singolare: The group was disbanded last month, il gruppo è stato sciolto il mese scorso. Se invece si pensa alle singole persone che fanno cose diverse all'interno del gruppo, si sceglie il plurale: Our group have a lot of projects to finish, il nostro gruppo ha molti progetti da completare. Si noti che quando il verbo è al singolare, un'eventuale proposizione relativa sarà introdotta da which o that, mentre se il verbo è al plurale, poiché si pensa alle persone, si ricorre a who.
